Armenian literature officially began in the early 5th century with the invention of the Armenian alphabet, which made it possible to translate the Bible and marked the beginning of a rich body of religious and historical works.
In the Middle Ages, it was distinguished by great mystical poetry, notably *The Book of Lamentations* (Gregory of Narek) and religious hymns.
Subsequently, with the dispersion of the Armenian people, it flourished in diaspora communities (Venice, Constantinople, Tbilisi). Armenian printing played a key role in cultural dissemination.
In the 19th century, a national renaissance modernized literature, which became more socially engaged.
The 20th century was profoundly marked by the Genocide, repression, and exoduses—central themes for many writers.
Today, Armenian literature explores identity, memory, and contemporary challenges, while remaining deeply rooted in its history.
